This article by K.J Dellatonia discusses the change in health education that will be taking place in January at New York City public high schools. Because I am assessing the changing education of health and health related topics, this article is perfect for my part of this project. Dellatonia talks about how these New York City public school students, including middle schools, will be required to take a mandatory sex education class. It can be added onto the health curriculum or be taught as a separate class but regardless, the students will be required to take this class. It will discuss many sexual activities; close up pictures of penises and vulvas and even some graphic, but legal, videos of what happens in certain situations. There will even be a section in the curriculum discussing how gays and lesbians can go about getting the same sexual experiences as straight people do, a subject that is never or very rarely talked about in schools today.This article definitely grabbed my attention immediately after reading the first few sentences. It is exactly the kind of article that I need in order to present my topic effectively for the class. It explains what will be required in the curriculum and I can definitely compare it to my health classes that I took in middle school and high school. One of the main things that got my attention was that Dellatonia says gays and lesbians will be discussed in more sexual detail as to better educate the students. Now, in my health class, we spent a total of 2 days on gay and lesbians and we never once discussed the sexual options they have. That is definitely something that I will be comparing to the class. It also discusses the concerns that parents and other students have with this required class which will also prove to be very helpful.
This is actually a very interesting article. Instead of talking about how we should change the health education classes in schools, Rogers talks about how people can and are getting offended by just the idea of people telling them how they should be eating. He also talks about how education has changed based on new nutrition requirements, health requirements, driving rules and accidents and even smoking risks. In order to have a Heart Healthy criterion, Rogers says that it would have to focus on the present and future well-being of the students. He states that we need to find more solid evidence correlating exercise to healthier weights, etc. After reading this, I realized that I may have to do some more research to counter his doubts on weight loss and exercise and stuff like that. This was written a while ago and that data has definitely changed since then. There is now proof that certain things like weight loss and exercise go together and may lead to a healthier weight and an over-all healthier body. I will find the data proving that and then talk about how that may have an effect on education and gym class requirements now days.
This article talks about how nutrition and health education should be a required course for college freshmen to take their first year in college. It says that by students taking a class like this, the “Freshman 15” weight gain and the number of teen pregnancies can and will be reduced. This course would be considered a general education requirement worth 1 credit and will cover eating habits and sexual education. I’m using this article to strengthen my points that health education should be required for all grade levels, even throughout college.It will aslo help me show that with a little guidence, throughout our lives, we can overcome the obesity crisis.
